Old fuseboard with no RCD ptroection

From flickering lights to additional capacity, or frequent tripping to regulatory compliance, there is a whole array of reasons people choose or need to upgrade their fuseboard. So why not let me, Jason at Fairway Electrical Bristol give you peace of mind with a Fuseboard Upgrade in your Bristol home.

Fuseboard or Consumer Unit?

Fuseboard Upgrades will ensure your safety as well as ensuring you are compliant with current regulations. On a side note to referring to upgrades, some people will also note the upgrade in terminology that now refers to the newer models as consumer units. Ultimately these boards or units however you refer to them do the same thing. They send electricity around your home in Bristol and protect against surges which is when the flow of electricity is interrupted and then started again forcing too much current through the system. The main difference between the old and new style fuseboards/ consumer units is that the fuse will shut off when there is a power surge and subsequently need to be replaced in contrast to switches that trip and then merely have to be reset. With many improvements to various technology over the years a Fuseboard Upgrade comes with residual current devices (RCD’s) too which switches off the electricity automatically if there is a fault for improved safety.

Finding your way around…

If you are not familiar with how your Fuseboard Upgrade will work let me set out the basics of what your new addition to your Bristol home will look like.

In a nutshell I will make you aware of the three main components. Firstly is the main switch – this gives you complete control of the electricity powering into your home. In the event of an emergency if you flick this switch the power will cease immediately. Secondly are the circuit breakers – your home will be broken down into sections each relating to a separate circuit. If you overload these circuits and the current is raised too high it will shut down or trip as its also known. This will prevent an electrical fire.  Finally the RCD’s as I mentioned above. Standing tall above the circuit breakers, there will often be two of these; one covering each half that can also trip if the power surges.
